Somalia celebrates 62nd independence day
Somalia celebrated the 62nd anniversary of its independence on Friday.
The southern regions of Somalia gained independence from Italy in 1960 after years of struggle. The Northern areas, now Somaliland, gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, and merged with the South four days later to become the Republic of Somalia.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud congratulated the Somali people. President Hasan Sheikh Mahmud, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and deputies attended the ceremony held in the capital Mogadishu.
In his speech on independence day, Mahmud said that his country is at peace with the whole world.
