Somalia and Kenya decrease recent tensions

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud paid two days official visit to Kenya to strengthen ties following the recent tensions over the trade and maritime border.

Kenyan President and his Somalian counterpart Mohamud issued a joint statement after their bilateral meeting.

According to the statement, Kenya and Somalia renewed their joint commitment to work together in areas of mutual interest and deepen bilateral relations. The two leaders will cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

Relations between Kenya and Somalia began to deteriorate in 2020. Mogadishu had cut diplomatic ties with Kenya and accused Nairobi of meddling in its internal affairs.

An agreement was reached on the opening of borders in order to facilitate the transportation of the citizens of the two countries and to develop the trade of goods and services.

Somalia has allowed Kenya Airways to resume scheduled flights to the capital Mogadishu.
