Senegalese President Macky Sall discusses food crisis with Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Senegalese President Macky Sall in Sochi on the Russian Black Sea coast on June 3, 2022.

During the meeting, issues on food security, western sanctions, security and the Ukraine-Russia crisis were discussed.

Sall, who is the African Union term president, stated that the crisis between Russia and Ukraine has increased food prices in the world and supported peace negotiations to ensure food security.

“Sanctions against Russia have made the situation worse, we no longer have access to grain and especially wheat from Russia.”  Sall said.

Pointing out that the situation regarding food products should be resolved, Sall said, “We need to work together to exempt food products, especially grains and fertilizers, from sanctions.”

The Russian president spoke of “several ways to facilitate the export” of tons of grain and fertilizer to the continent, which has been blocked in Ukraine since the start of the Russian offensive.

Macky Sall noted that the food tensions caused by the conflict are aggravated by Western sanctions affecting Russia’s logistics, trade and financial chain.
