DRC President Félix Tshisekedi has elected SADC new term president

Félix Tshisekedi took over the Presidency of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from Malawi at the 42nd Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, on 17 and 18 August 2022.

The summit has been held under the theme “Promoting Industrialization through Agro-Industry, Mineral Resource Enrichment and Regional Value Chains for Inclusive and Resilient Economic Growth.

Former SADC chairman Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera urged member states, especially the Democratic Republic of Kenya, to be independent of outside influences.

“The plunder that we have allowed the West to conduct in the DRC is a sin we must repent on, resolve and refuse to see repeated anywhere else in our region,” said Lazarus Chakweera, the president of Malawi.

The Kinshasa Summit hosts a dozen SADC Heads of State. It aims to advance regional integration in line with SADC’s aspirations, envisioning an industrialized, peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-to-high-income region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic prosperity.
